Crankworx 2013

Crankworx Whistler is only a week away and I’m jittery with anticipation! If you LOVE mountain biking as much as I do, than you’ll understand what all the fuss is about. On August 9, the world’s best downhill, slopestyle and enduro riders will gather at the Whistler Mountain Bike Park for the 10th Annual Crankworx. All things freeride, Crankworx is a 10-day festival of epic endurance, supreme flow, monster air and vertical-dropping riding. A time-tested stage for gravity-fed mountain biking, Crankworx has forged the future of freeride, launched careers and raised up a spectacle out of dirt, sweat and cheers. Feel the impact. Embrace the amplitude. Experience the awe that is Crankworx Whistler 2013.

Once again I’ll be at the heart of the action, taking in the shows, events and media parties. I cannot wait for this incredible event and I hope you too can make it out for what promisses to be a SPECTACULAR EVENT! If you cannot make it, not to worry as you can still tune in to watch the main events live at crankworx.com.

Crankworx is not just for those who ride, but a great event for families and kids of all ages (grown ups included) to take in the action. Chill on the patio with a cold one during the Joyride Slopestile or attend the Friday night crit with your family to watch a time-trial style road race on mountain bikes through the heart of Whistler Village. Attend the Cheese Rolling competition where you’ll get to sample some great cheese and watch people compete for a chance to win some great prizes in the Cheese Rolling main event. At Crankworx there is much to do and so much to see, that bikes are completely optional.

If you see me out during the show, wearing my bikepirate T, stop and say HI. I’ll have loads of bikepirate stickers to give out.

SCHEDULE

Watch the Fat Tire Crit from Whistler Village – Friday, August 9

This event is both a crowd-pleaser and Crankworx favourite. The Fat Tire Crit will kick off this year’s festival on Friday, August 9, with a time-trial style road race on mountain bikes through the heart of Whistler Village. A tactical and technical race, this one is as much about strategy as it is about riding bikes. The women’s race takes place from 6:30pm-7pm, followed by the men’s race from 7pm-7:30pm, and the award ceremony at 7:30pm at Whistler Olympic Plaza.

Take in the Dual Speed & Style from Skier’s Plaza – Saturday, August 10

Top Dual Slalom racers and slopestyle superstars have been invited to race in this event through side-by-side tricked-out dual tracks. Competitors have the opportunity to win money in each round of the event, as style points are awarded for riders who take full advantage of the features on the course, and overall speed is also taken into account. This event takes place in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park Boneyard, and can be viewed from Skier’s Plaza on Saturday, August 10 from 5pm-7pm. The live webcast will also be available on www.crankworx.com for online viewing.

Ticketed seating for the event is available for $5 through Whistler Blackcomb Guest Relations, allowing access to the beer garden, and doors to this event will also open at 8pm.

Training will take place from 11am–12:30pm, time trials will take place between 1pm–2:30pm, and finals will take place from 8pm–9pm under dark skies and flood lights, and will be followed immediately by an awards ceremony at Whistler Olympic Plaza.

Get your taste buds rolling at the Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival – Saturday, August 17

Spectators can watch competitors race and tumble downhill after a speeding wheel of cheese to win Whistler Blackcomb season passes and the wheel of cheese they were chasing. There will be a cheese farmer’s market where attendees can sample delicious cheeses made from 100 percent Canadian milk, learn all about cheese in the seminar tent, and keep their children entertained with free activities, races and games. This event will take place from 12pm-4pm on Saturday, August 17 at Blackcomb Mountain at Base 2. Upload to the site via Excalibur Gondola from Whistler Village.

Experience Red Bull Joyride – Saturday, August 17

The Saturday Slopestyle has been the largest spectacle of Crankworx since its first year in 2004. Red Bull Joyride is an invitational showcase for the best riders to interpret a custom-built, rider-inspired course that incorporates natural terrain and gigantic man-made features. This year, Red Bull Joyride will take place as always in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park Boneyard on Saturday, August 17, from 5pm–7pm with a live webcast on www.crankworx.com for those who are unable to attend.
