Nose Hill

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Located in northwest Calgary, Nose Hill Park covers 11.27 square kilometers and is surrounded by 12 residential communities. The mountain bike trails range from beginner to intermediate. This is a great area for those learning to mountain bike wanting to get a taste of some real smooth and rolling singletrack without much technical to throw you off your game. Nose Hill is a great early season ride as the trails do get overgrown during the summer months. Please stay on established trails.

There are a number of singletrack trails that zigzag and cross the main gravel/paved paths to explore. One can easily spend a few hours trying to link them all. A suggested beginner to intermediate loop is shown on the map. 13.8 km in total, this loop will take anywhere from 1 – 2 hrs to complete.

So I went for a MTB ride around Nosehill Saturday April 27th 2013 … and noted a LOT of
new flagged stakes that had clearly been surveyed for their position
and routing. Most of them had writing on them which included the word
“path”. Also spoke w/ several walkers up there about it… and they were NOT happy at all. It appears that
the 2005 Nosehill project to revert Nosehill from a Nature reserve to an
“area with lots of large paved paths” is kicking off. These 3 paths
were all in the SE quadrant and were on predominantly low-use and
low-access trails (ie who access’s the park from the corner of
Shaganappi Trail and John Laurie?). WFT???!! Not to mention the
stakes were often on very narrow trails and planted smack-dab in the
middle presenting a real hazard to users… especially since a number
had been broken near the ground leaving dangerous spikes ready to rip
into wildlife, dogs, walkers, and cyclists.

So other than b*tching about this what have I done?

    1. Called 311 and reported the hazard of these spikes. I have a file # now and Parks is supposed to call back pronto.

    2.
Logged a complaint w/ 311 about this park “upgrade”, based on 2005 data
(ie obsolete) and total lake of any park signage indicating the intent
of the stakes or development plan.

What can YOU do? …. please call 311 and do the same!!

Thanks for sharing. It’s too bad to hear that the area will be made up of paved pathways.

      Hi Rich(ie),

Thank you for the update! We will be riding this area on the weekend and will also file with 311 once we have been.

Hopefully we can keep these trails as the are (minus the stakes!)
