Stoney Trail

Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada

Stoney Trail is mostly an easy rolling double track that may be ridden either direction, one-way, or used as a connector to Barrier Lake day use area, the Bow Valley Park interchange, or the Ribbon Creek day use area; depending on which way you ride this trail. We recommend riding Stoney from the Stoney carpark if you’re out for a family outing, as the elevation gained is less and you can access it directly from Kananaskis Village using a network of trails and pathways.

This trail is not for the hard core mountain biker, but rather well suited to a family outing. One can expect a nice scenic ride that follows the power lines along beautiful grassy meadows and mixed forests. The smoothest section of trail lies between Ribbon Creek and the Jewell Pass junction. North of Jewell the trail does get considerably narrower in a number of sections (singletrack), with added roots and loose rock, before opening up again on some nice and wide double track once you near the Bow Valley Park interchange.

Please note there is an annual closure in effect from April 15 – June 15 on the section of trail heading south from Jewell Pass to Troll Falls.

Trail information/options

There is an option to extend or loop (lollypop) your ride by taking the 5.7 km extension down towards the Kananaskis River; as shown on the map above. There you’ll spot a number of broken bridges, before making your way back up to the main trail. This route sees a large amount of horse traffic and is not recommended. The trail extension/option has seen better days. Large exposed roots, loose rocks, and eroded trail make for tough going when on your mountain bike. You may find yourself dismounting your bike often to get through this section of trail, which should really be rated intermediate to advanced.
