Dead Birch is a beginner trail located in the north end of Mosquito Mosquito Lake Area. It is used to exit the north end trails or to gain access to them via the hydro lines access road, which may be ridden south directly from Reid Road. To exit the north end trails, ride Dead Birch west until you reach the hydro access road. Once on the hydro access road turn right to descend down to Reid Road or left to climb the steep doubletrack south to connect up with the plethora of trails located in the heart of Mosquito Lake Area.

Dead Birch may be ridden in either direction. When accessed from the west via the hydro access road, the trail takes the rider through a short dense section of vegetation; this section is typically overgrown and hard to follow. Fall tends to be the best time to ride Dead Birch as the vegetation will have receded, making the section to the west much more enjoyable to ride. About 100 m down the trail the vegetation eventually retreats, as you enter the dark forest. From there the remainder of the trail is very flowy and fun, as it follows the narrow singletrack to Jim-Jam, crossing Wolf’s Trails along the way. At the Jim-Jam junction, ride straight across to Hand-Job and continue to climb south on Hand-Job towards Mosquito Lake.

Take Portage Road to Reid Road. Ride or drive up Reid Road for about 500 m. Look for the hydro lines to your left. Park near them and ride up the hydro lines access road for about 480 m to the trailhead for Dead Birch located on rider’s left. You will pedal past two trailheads for Wolf’s Trails before reaching the trailhead for Dead Birch. None of the trails are marked, so pay close attention to where the trail forks. 480 m up the hydro access road the trail will fork, ride left to begin Dead Birch.
