Fred is an interesting line connecting Skookum or IMBA Smart to Word of Mouth or Lower Powersmart. It is located north of Quest University and is also ridden as a part of a fun intermediate loop option that combines a section of the Legacy Climb with Fred, Tinder, Your Mom and Phil and Cam’s.

This is a technical x-country singletrack ride with many short steep ups, a couple of quick, steep downs and a really nice and fun finish. There are a few optional lines along this route, with several low lying ladder bridges to get across. Fred is a fun ride, providing ample loop options when ridden in conjunction with the aforementioned trails. Turn right at the bottom of the trail to find Word of Mouth and Lower Powersmart or left to access Tinder.

There are two entrances for Fred, only a stone’s throw apart. Either entrance is good to go. The choice is yours depending on whether you’re approaching the trail from the north or the south.

Built by David Reid and his son Griffin while “hiding in the woods from his sister in law” as Dave put it, Fred was not the first choice for the trail name. The name came about during discussions with his son, who said let’s call it Fred. Naming the trail dimwit, Gato Diablo or Cougar Bait did not sit well with Griffin, according to him these were weird titles and the trail should be a name. When Griffin got sick with a fever, Dave built the sign for the trail calling it Fred to help his son feel better.

March 2015 trail update: Fred has been impacted by logging during the winter of 2014/2015. The entrance and first 100 m or so are logged.

The most direct route to Fred is riding up Ring Creek North FSR from the Half Nelson parking lot. Climb up Ring Creek until you come to the large switchback just past the Pseudotsuga trailhead and the kiosk with the area map. Ride north onto the singletrack trail ahead, instead of climbing the switchback and continue along this trail until you come across Fred – to your left.

Another option is to access Fred via the west end of IMBA Smart or Skookum.
