Micro Climate is an advanced descending trail located off of Blackcomb Mountain. It opened fully in the spring of 2014. Designed by Dave Anderson and Paul Stevens, this trail has become an instant Whistler Classic and one of the best new trails in the Whistler Valley. This technical delight will challenge the rider with its steep, narrow and tight singletrack as it descends down towards the junction with Hey Bud. At the junction keep right to descend the final 200 m of Hey Bud to the access road below. Once you spit out onto the access road ride right to continue up Yummy Numby (climb to Comfortably Numb), if you’re looking to ride more trail, or turn left and descend down to the base of Blackcomb.
The trail winds through the thick forest canopy as it rolls into well bermed corners and down steep and sustained rooty singletrack. Only two ladder bridges line the natural terrain, both wide and in place to help you get up the upslope. There are no slab rolls on this ride, with only minimal rock lining the trail in a few spots. Most of the riding takes you down the narrow and soft singletrack. Micro Climate is a fantastic trail to be enjoyed by experienced riders looking for a warm up to Hey Bud or Crazy Train – both located near Micro Climate, but much more intense and rated expert.
Access to Micro Climate is found just above the upload to the Excelerator Express chair and is a grunt to get to. Begin your ride from Painted Cliff Rd., pedaling up Spearhead Trail – located near the bottom of Painted Cliff Rd.. Ride up Spearhead Trail, which will turn into gravel 40 metres up the pathway. Keep right on the trail at the first fork and continue to climb to the T-junction. Turn left (right is a dead end) at the T-junction and ride to the next fork. Stay right at this fork, climbing the switchback to your right. This will lead you to a red gate found at the next junction. Pedal straight past the red gate and continue to climb up – do not descend right or ride left. From here on in follow the switchbacking dirt road until you pass the trailhead for Golden Boner. From Golden Boner continue up the access road, pedaling under the Gondola and Wizard Express into the last switchback. From the last switchback it is 500 m to a newly built singletrack and access for Crazy Train, Hey Bud and Mirco Climate. The singletrack heads left into the woods and climbs to the right of the trailheads for Crazy Train and Hey Bud until it reaches the top of Excalibur Gondola. From the gondola, ride left up and past Excelerator to the access road above. Once on the access road, turn left and ride 100 m to the entrance to Micro Climate.

Ride up from the base of Blackcomb to the summer access road and continue to climb until you pass by the top of the Excalibur Gondola. One last switchback up from the gondola will take you under the Excelerator chair. The trailhead for Micro Climate is found by the 2nd green sign located on the left side of the access road. It’s marked with a large Whistler/Blackcomb sign reminding riders that this trail leaves Whistler/Blackcomb property and is a ride at your own risk route not maintained by the mountain.
