Pioneer is an alternative route or bypass to the skid track (original line) found halfway down K2 in the One Mile Lake Area. Most riders end up riding Pioneer as it’s the more natural line leading the rider straight ahead at the well-defined fork halfway down K2. A large boulder is located right of the fork, for those trying to get their bearings. Turning right at the fork, after the boulder, takes the rider over to the original line for K2; a skid track down a steep chute that doesn’t let up until it spits you out near the end of Pioneer. For most riders the preferred choice is to continue on down Pioneer. Please note that heading right at the fork, to ride the steep and loose line down K2, will lead to a second fork (first switchback) to be taken left. Otherwise continuing right will put the rider on Brake-Away which leads to Lumpy’s Epic.

Pioneer is a well-built trail that utilizes the natural terrain and incorporates several switchbacks that send the rider into nicely bermed corners and down some steep, yet flowy singletrack. There are several small roots and rocks lining the trail that may be popped effortlessly for those looking to catch some air. The trail utilizes the terrain to the fullest, making this a great alternative to riding the original fall line down K2. Hats off to the builder for taking the time and putting in the effort required to build this short, yet fun, track down. In my opinion Pioneer greatly improves the final section of K2, prolonging rider enjoyment as it switchbacks down the mountain.

Located halfway down K2, Pioneer is a bypass to the old “skid track” line down K2. When descending K2, at about the 1.2 km mark, you will come to a fork in the trail. The natural line straight ahead is Pioneer. For those that have never ridden K2, Pioneer will seem like the obvious choice down.
