While Severed D has a couple of steeper and more challenging sections, it’s mostly a mellow and fun rip.The top of the trail is flatter with quite a few narrow and challenging log-rides across swampy sections of trail and one notable challenging climb, which leads to the actual trailhead sign for Severed D. The middle section of Severed D contains a series of steeper sections, some of which have ride around options and some of which don’t. None of these are particularly dangerous or exposed, although the roots get more slippery when it rains and add a bit more danger to the mix. There is one notable three foot drop over a tree trunk. While it isn’t mandatory, the roll down option that has been built is very tight and on the right hand side of the tree trunk where the root ball sticks up and out of the dirt. The roll down is completely invisible until you’re right on top of it, so check your line before you attempt this section. As with any other trail it’s a good idea to check all sections of trail that include Technical Trail Features (TTFs) or may pose a challenge, before you leap, no matter what the circumstances.

Severed D hasn’t seen a lot of work recently, so it maintains the old-school feel of narrow log rides and straight down the hill excitement. It’s a good choice for a technical challenge that won’t get out of hand and much more suited to the all-mountain/trail bike. A full DH rig is a bit too much, especially on the pedally sections.

TRAILHEAD | N49 20.318 W122 58.633

The trailhead is clearly marked with a wooded signpost on the south side of Baden Powell. Access it via Baden Powell, before the power lines, where Baden Powell veers right. Ride the TTFs across the swampy section and up the short hill to the trailhead sign, actually 170 m down from Baden Powell.
