Shama is the final piece to a series of connecting singletrack trails built to be climbed all the way to the top of Mackenzie Ridge. Connecting Happy>Giv’r>Shama>Waco>Nimby>Let it Go>Middle Earth>Skelula7 makes for an epic singletrack climb that measures over 16 km and ends at the trailheads for Jack the Ripper and Owl-Mackenzie Connector.

Shama or 7’ama, meaning white man in the Ucwalmícwts language of the local Stl’atl’imc (aboriginal) people including people of the Lil’wat Nation, is a fun connector built to be climbed and is located in the lower Mackenzie area of Pemberton. Although the trail was meant as a climb, it may be ridden in either direction as it also flows very well when descended. Technically, Shama is rated intermediate and was built by Nigel to provide a more interesting climb up towards Nimby from Happy by incorporating the short Giv’r trail. Nigel is an active trail builder in the area who has spent hundreds of hours planning and building trails. Over 15 years in the making, Nigel has finally achieved his vision of building a climbing route to the top of Mackenzie when he put the finishing touches on Shama in the fall of 2013. With the addition of Shama, one can now link Giv’r to Waco Connector, found at the end of the Happy Trail climb, cutting out the long and flat switchback on Waco.

If you’re descending Back Pains or just finished the second section of Bob Gnarly and want to connect with Indy 500, Shama will get you there quickly and easily. The north trailhead is found to the east of Back Pains and Bob Gnarly, while the south entrance is located at the junction for Giv’r and Indy 500.

TRAILHEAD | N50 19.915 W122 46.722

Shama is accessed via Giv’r when climbed and is found at the junction with Indy 500 and Giv’r. The trail heads left (north) of Indy 500. Simply climb Happy Trail to Waco, take a right onto Giv’r, climb Giv’r to the junction with Indy 500 and look for the well-marked Shama heading north.

To descend Shama, look for the trailhead running south from Waco Connector and located in-between Back Pains and Hawaii.
