A word of caution, Shit Happens and the No Flow Zone is not for everyone. If you prefer buff singletrack to tech – rocks, roots, steeps and slabs – then do not bother riding here. However, if you’re like me and enjoy a good challenge, both climbing and descending, than this trail is for you. Shit Happens is the main artery located in the No Flow Zone. It is also the longest and probably the most demanding trail in the area. Shit Happens will work you and your bike with its boulders, rocks, roots, ups and downs. Climbing this trail is not easy as it is steep and techy in several spots along its route. The trail may be ridden in either direction, depending on where you begin and what options you link it with. The rewards that come with riding here are many; the satisfaction of cleaning a good part of the trail, access to some really cool viewpoints, finding the hidden swim spot (refreshing on a scorching hot summer day), and of course the awesome techy descents down some pretty cool slab features. If you’re up for the challenge, you won’t be disappointed. The more you ride this area, the easier it will be to find your flow – believe me, it does have “old school” flow, you just have to ride it a few times to get it.
There are several ways to access Shit Happens. The original line use to connect directly with Alpine Meadows, but was bulldozed during the Rainbow development. It now begins from the northeast end of Rainbow located on Ashley McIvor Drive. A popular access point is still from Alpine Meadows, riding Delineator high above Rainbow to Shit Happens. Or you can get to the trail from Emerald. Choosing your access point depends on what trail you want to link Shit Happens with to create an exciting loop. My personal favourite is the following: Delineator> Shit Happens> Big Kahuna> Shit Happens > Delineator. There are many more options here, so get out there and decide what works best for you.

Rainbow Access: Access to Shit Happens from Rainbow subdivision is found on Ashley McIvor Drive. From Hwy 99 take Crazy Canuck Drive into Rainbow. Follow Crazy Canuck up to the round-about and keep heading up the street until it turns to Ashley McIvor Drive. The trailhead for Shit Happens is located on the second corner of Ashley McIvor. Look for a trail to head east into the woods.
Emerald Access: Take Hwy 99 to Autumn Drive. Ride up Autumn Drive all the way to Emerald Drive (T-Junction). Take a right onto Emerald Drive and follow it around for 200 m to the gravel road on the left with a yellow gate. Take the gravel path beyond the yellow gate for about 600 m to the T-junction. Shit Happens heads left along the well-used rocky route.
