Star Wars is a super fun and flowy freeride trail with wooden features, huge bermed corners, and a big wall ride to boot. Built with the beginner to intermediate rider in mind, Star Wars is the perfect trail to take young riders on to introduce them to the sport of freeriding. Both young and old, beginner to expert, will have a blast riding laps on this kilometre-long descent. When combined with Return of the Jedi, the up track to the start of Star Wars, this loop is just over 2.5 km in length.

Star Wars was built in 2010 by the Bow Valley Mountain Bike Alliance (BVMBA) in partnership with Parks Canada, and is quickly becoming one of the most visited mountain bike trails in the Park. However, as the trail hasn’t seen regular maintenance, some of the features are starting to show their age. Please ride with care and make sure to check all features before rolling them. The BVMBA is planning to put some work into Star Wars over the next few years and the rumoured plan is that this track will become one of Banff’s first flow trails.

TRAILHEAD | 51.18196 W115.55268

The trailhead is located off of Tunnel Mountain Drive, above the Buffalo Mountain Lodge. Look for a small singletrack on the uphill side heading into the woods; it is now well marked with a sign pointing in the direction of the trailhead. Follow this for less than 30 metres to the start of the trail. A silver trail sign with “Star Wars” etched in on it and a wooden feature at the beginning of the trail indicates you are in the right spot.

Might be a long shot, but anybody know if this trail is currently rideable? I’m going to be in the area this weekend and would love to go for a rip

  • Sean

Any idea if this trail gets ridden in winter, fatbike season? Looks like fun!

    • It’s been known to get a few fat tires on it throughout the winter.

  • Chris

Rode it back in May along with some of the other official mtb trails in Banff (Tunnel Mountain and Minnewanka). All were bone dry and in great condition.

  • Niall

Does anyone know if this is open yet?

    • sorry Niall, no recent updates posted. I imagine it should be open or close to it, but cannot confirm at this time. Hopefully another BP visitor will confirm this for you.

Hey Paul, just an FYI/ quick note to advise that the second half of Star Wars loop (the up track) is called “Return of the Jedi”.

Thanks for all your work and for a great site, we are happy to have you noted on the BVMBA site.
